PET & TRAVEL TO BG

Well, not an awful lot to report since our decision to make Bulgaria our permanent home as soon as possible, except it probably is not going to be as soon as we’d have liked.

We have someone interested in our house, so much so she has even put her house on the market at £5000 less than she has been advised to do just to buy ours and if she misses out on ours she will take hers off the market.

Her dad has offered to buy it cash as has practically completed on his house sale and would just need a bridging loan on the difference to afford ours until hers is sold.

Anyway to cut a long story short, nothing has happened!!

Our agent says now the kids are back at school things will pick up, we hope so as it is very frustrating not being able to go ahead with anything.

We are out to BG next week and were hoping to be able to book our appointment with the BG Embassy in London before we go for when we came back, but it will have to wait by the looks of it, unless a minor miracle happens this week.

You never know!

Usually by now we have our suitcases down, but we are not overly excited as it is just like a prelude to the real thing!!

I sound like a right moaning Minnie!

Well, I did sort one thing out, I took Kassie to the vets for her rabies jab, she wasn’t impressed.  She has advanced arthritis, was diagnosed at the age of 5 last July.  Every month to 6 weeks she has to have a cartrophen injection to encourage the growth of cartilage in her 2 front elbows, so wasn't so keen on the vet when he pricked her twice this time, little does she know there is worse to come.

I was devastated when I found out, as I used to take her for 5 mile walks almost daily down the beach, plus her short walks to the park, but she can now only manage the short walks before she starts to limp.  I couldn’t help thinking it was me who caused it in the first place as me and Kassie have always been together.

One time we went for a lovely walk down the beach and then sat on a bench with the slats.

She came up on the bench with me to take in the lovely view.

I got up to go, and she jumped up to follow, unfortunately leaving her rear leg in between the slats, and yelped like a big baby until I could release her.

She couldn’t walk on it, and so I had to carry her, bearing in mind she is 20 kgs and a solid little Staffie I found it very difficult to carry her for long and without a mobile or car was starting to panic as she didn’t look right to me at all.

I was crying every step of the way, on the main road to the vets tears were streaming, but not one car stopped to help me.

I was so upset that I went up the wrong road toward the vets and found it was a dead end, unable to carry her any further I had to put her down, and she couldn’t put any weight down on it, so hobbled, I kept calling her to keep up, but after about 10 mins she just lay down and refused to budge!

I picked her up and managed to get her to the residential home that I worked at then.  My friend Glyn was on duty thank goodness.

Matron gave her permission to take me up to the vets.

I cried the whole time, and couldn’t speak at the vets.

She hadn’t broken it though, just torn something, I can’t even remember now.

I think I was the bigger baby out of the two of us!

She has a small white line of fur against her brown exactly where the damage was done.

I love my Kassie, and I know you will all think what a soppy cow I am, but I don’t care, animal lovers will understand, I know that much.

Anyway, she will need to have this injection in Bulgaria too, so I asked the vet for the details of it to take to a vet in Yambol when there next week.

I phoned Defra this afternoon to be told she also has to have a blood test for Brucella Canis, this is for dogs going to Bulgaria from the UK.

This needs to be done within 60 days prior to the export of the animal.

You can get more info on this from this www

http://www.ivis.org/advances/Infect_Dis_Carmichael/shin/ivis.pdf

Some tips

Your dog or cat will need to be micro chipped

They will need a rabies injection which has to be done after the microchip has been fitted; if it is done before the micro chip has been fitted it will need to be redone.

This is to make sure the pet has correctly been identified and documented on the paperwork when vaccinated.  The rabies vaccination needs to be done no less than 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to the proposed date of export.

It also states that a dog will need an injection against canine distemper and a cat a feline panleucopaenia on the UK to BG Health certificate.

I have a feeling these are the annual ones we get, I am glad I had them done.

And within 60 days of the export it says the animal, so cats and dogs??? Has to have been tested with broad spectrum anthelmintic effective against Echinoccus Multiocularis.

Have no idea what this one’s all about, but will let you all know, or perhaps someone could enlighten me!

Then they will need the blood test 3-4 weeks after the rabies jab, to see that the rabies vaccine has worked.  Also the Brucella Canis can most likely be done then, although I will let you know if different.

Some people have said that it takes 6 months for the pet passport stuff to be done, this is not so, the 6 month rule applies to pets coming back to the UK only, after spending time in another country.  There has to be 6 months clear from the date of the blood test being ok’d.  Also if you want to return to the UK your pet must be treated against ticks and tapeworms and has to be done by any vet in any country before returning, you cannot do it yourself and it has to be recorded as identified with the chip on the passport.

You will need a pet passport to travel across Europe and/or to return to the UK, but not if flying to Bulgaria.

You will also need an export health certificate signed by a vet to state the animal is fit to travel which will be done 24 hours prior to travel and includes an parasite check, and free from clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease, and is fit to travel.

If your pet is under 3 months old, the rules are different, and you will need to contact your local DEFRA office for more info.

I am just going to take the forms I was sent from my local Defra for my vet to give the once over and send me the bill.

Easy peasy.

Bulgarian Embassy in London has now updated their site here

Transporting our goods.

We have decided one thing for sure.

After the terrible stories of a removal firm who let down several forum members I decided for sure that we would ship our stuff over with a firm called John Good Shipping.  They have a 20ft or 40 ft container which will take approx 33 days to ship from Devon to Bourgas at a cost of £1130, from Devon to Varna at a little over £1200.

They are a reputable firm who have been going for 30 years and Mike and Helen have used them and can assist with the customs clearance, help to translate the lists you will need to do and transport back to your place.

It may be the longest way so not ideal for everybody, but the heartache caused by 2 Brits is enough to convince me that it is the best way apart from doing it yourself.

Now we have to decide how WE are going to get there.

I want to travel by land as it will be fun, and Darren wants to fly, but I can't get hold of BA about flying Kassie, and we can't find a LHD which we want to take over, so will work this out next hopefully.

Night all.

6th September

Today started off like any other day, sun was shining; I had my breakfast (porridge), walked Kassie round the park, and then parked by bottom on my chair in front of my pc.

Nothing very exciting or unusual about any of that!

I decided I must send out some invites for our housewarming party in Bulgaria next week.

We had decided on the 21st, so I made up an email with a piccie background of an invite and added directions to it.

Sent it out to all our “Bulgarian” friends.  I didn’t send one at that point to Mike and Helen as I wanted to do a different one to them without our address and details on, what’s the point they know where we are.

Looked up at the clock, sh@t!!!!  I will be late for work and am still not changed into my work stuff, or had time for lunch, happens every workday actually, thinking it is time to give it up!!!

Work that is, not my beloved pc!

So, I set off walking to work, have the car, but it’s just such a lovely day and I won’t get any exercise if I didn’t walk to work, and I manage to make it on time, as usual!

I have my receptionist at the Doctor’s surgery hat on today, and we open after lunch at 1:30 pm.

I switch the phones over and take a couple of calls before Christina goes for her lunch hour.  Then line two rings, this line is designated for district nurses/doctors/hospitals etc and for us to phone in sick!

This chap who sounds like a familiar patient with a slow voice asks to make an appointment with the nurse, so I tell him he has come through to the wrong line and will have to redial the surgery appointments number, he replied that he hasn’t and wants the appointment, so again I told him to redial (of course if he does redial, I will answer anyhow!) he starts to laugh and I recognised the laughing as my dearly beloved playing tricks on me, ha ha, actually I thought it was really funny as he did a great impersonation of one of our patients for sure!

He rang as the estate agent called to say that the lady we have been waiting for has sold her house after just 10 days on the market, not surprising really though as she had it for £5000 under the valuation to get a quick sale in order to buy ours.

We gave up on her a few days ago as had heard nothing.

Well she has sold it to a cash buyer!!! And wants to complete in wait for it………………6 – 8 weeks!!!

My stomach churned over, OMG!!! 2 months and we leave our family home for good!!  I was excited too, but felt a rush of feverish wooziness well up in my stomach.

It is really happening now!

We are going to Bulgaria!

I walked home after work, and thought of all the stuff I knew we had to do before but never put any of it into practice obviously thinking it was further away than it now is, and suddenly I felt sheer panic!!!

I was actually hyper-ventilating down the hill, not up for a change!

I had to get a grip, one thing at a time, but which bit do I do first???

Find a solicitor, pet passport, arrange D visas, and arrange Removal Company.  Get boxes for packing up stuff, move kids into house 2nd Oct, can’t get to the embassy now until the week after our hols as we need certain paperwork from Bulgaria that we don’t have here (1st week in Oct) that’s if we can get an appointment then, get time off work, bugger it, it has to be done, arrange flights and for Kassie but can’t get through to BA no matter how long they put me in the queue.

Too much stuff to do, too little time!!!  Can’t cope! Get a grip!  One thing at a time, but which thing first, second and third???

Get home and Darren is making tea so I get straight to the pc to start searching for answers.

30 emails, replies from the party invites, one from Helen & Mike, they have promised us a trip to Gabrovo and so wanted to take us there for 3 days, have paid for the trip 20th to 22nd Sept, OH NO!!!!  Told Darren, “What did they do that for?” he said, I replied because they said they would take us last time, sounded brilliant this is part of what they wrote

“We know that we have promised to take you up to Gabrovo for you too see how beautiful it is up there and to see our other house and to visit the working museum at Etra. Can’t wait for you to see the lovely city and its superb surroundings!  The scenery is drop dead and the museum is a real eye opener. They sell the items they make there so will be ideal for you to buy souvenirs for you to take home! Can’t wait for you to see it you will absolutely love it!! We know of a spectacular restaurant there to take you to, so bring loads of memory cards for your camera!”

Now do we let down all of the people I have sent the invites too, or let down one couple who are going to treat us???  Should really tell Mike and Helen we have made plans already, but they have paid and they won’t get that back, oh, bugger will send out a revised email to everyone else, but bloody typical this happens today!

So I sent the email out, and sent one to Mike and Helen telling them how lovely of them to do that for us and that we look forward to it, and sent their invite too.

7th September

Same again, breakfast, walked Kassie, computer, emails, one from Mike and Helen as follows, I read it open mouthed and well I was shocked!!!

"We had heard from Sue (Aussie Sue) you were sending out invites and as we hadn’t got one when we got home we thought we'd stitch you up!! And you fell for it hook line and sinker and instead of getting in touch you just changed all your arrangements!! I bet you were in a bit of a flap when our mail came through! We haven’t booked to take you but we are going to! Do you think we would arrange your hols without asking you??No what a wally! I hope you haven’t gone round sending out second invites to people to change the date!I sent the mail early enough expecting you to mail straight back! I guess it backfired on me now as instead of it being funny I feel a bit bad! If you have changed your party date then let us know and if you do want to go to Gabrovo on one of those dates then we will book it, but only if you want to go. If not let us know when is good for you. We will only need to go for one night if we do go.”

I couldn’t believe that they would do such a thing to us!!!  But, found it hilariously funny, fortunately.

So that’s the tale around the change of our house warming party for you all to have a laugh at.

Enjoy and see you all soon.

Nikki & Darren

: )

8th September

Things are getting on top of me, I wouldn't say I am the best at coping with stress, but Darren is being so supportive that it is really helping me.

He has been helping find out stuff on the Embassy site that I just don't appear to be able to find myself.
Probably because I am so easily distracted by emails from friends and relatives, lol.

I phoned Defra again today, and Gill at the Exeter office said we should check with the embassy that Staffie Bull Terriers are allowed into Bulgaria!!
Now I really don't know what I will do if they say no to my baby!
I am sure when we were there last there was an american pit bull terrier in our village alongside a beautiful looking Doberman.

Darren has just checked the Embassy but there isn't much on there, so have mailed the embassy and hope they will get back to us on that soon.

The other thing have been trying to find out is what documents need to be legalised by the Foreign Office, and what we need to have by the phone when we call the BG Embassy next week for our appointment to get our D visa's.  At £1 per minute I don't want to be faffing around looking for bits of paper to make the appt.
We have to get them as we have only 62 days remaining under the new rules started on the 1st Sept 2006.
And can't risk that the visa regime will/wont change in Jan 2007.

Will let you know the outcomes of all of these and other stuff as it happens.

Thanks for listening, especially Peter and Pauline, you know who you are : )

14th September

Today I decided to book our D Visa application appointment at the embassy, armed with our passport details and pen and paper, I began.
It starts with a choice of English or Bulgarian languages.
Press 1 for English.
If calling from a mobile or a standard phone you have to choose another option. You need a touch tone phone.
Need passport numbers and full address including postcode.
You can listen to the full list of required docs needed to show the embassy for your application.
There will be one appointment per person.
You have to key in how many people/passports need appointments.
A maximum of 4 appointments can be made on one phone call.
1 person can represent one family, if all immediate members.
You must not disconnect from the phone call until the appointment has been confirmed or it will not be made.
You have to key in how many appointments needed.
Then she will start to offer you appointments for 2 weeks from then (these are only M-F appointments)
So we are offered Mon the 25th Sept, Tues 26th Sept, Weds 27th Sept, Thurs 28th Sept, Fri 29th Sept, we are away all of these, press 2 for more Mon 2nd Oct we are moving kids into their new place and that is it, no more to offer, I will need to phone tomorrow for the next lot of appointments which I presume will go one day further onto Tues 2nd Oct.

JUST TO UPDATE THIS, NONE OF THIS D VISA STUFF IS NECESSARY NOW AS EU CITIZENS ARE ENTITLED TO 90 DAYS VISA FREE ENTRY INTO BULGARIA IN EVERY SIX MONTHS AND IF YOU WANT TO STAY FOR LONGER YOU CAN NOW APPLY FOR A LONG TERM RESIDENCY PERMIT WITH YOUR LOCAL IMMIGRATION OFFICE USUALLY IN THE POLICE STATION.
yOU WILL NEED TO CHECK WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED AS IT APPEARS TO VARY FROM AREA TO AREA, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE A TRANSLATOR WITH YOU.

IMPORTANT about the rabies blood test

I phoned the vets on Monday to make the follow up appointment for Kassie to have her blood test after the rabies shot, to be informed that after 30 days (it was 32 days since the jab) the test may not work.  And they couldn't fit me in until weds (34 days later)
This test can be done 14 days after the jab but needs to be before 30 days, but I was not told this by my vet at the time.
As it was the receptionists did get her in that day as I wasn't impressed, now we have to wait a further 10 days for the results, fingers crossed.

Everything was ok with the blood test.
You will need to check with Defra as the rules change frequently apparently.
